What You Need to Know About Water Testing and PFAS in Raeford, NC and the Surrounding Area

Recently, a notice was issued to Hoke County residents explaining that the North Carolina Department of Environmental Quality (NCDEQ) has expanded its Consent Order with Chemours to require PFAS (per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances) testing for residents who rely on private well water. While all residents may receive the notice, only well water users are eligible for testing through Chemours at this time.

If you rely on well water, you can contact Chemours directly to request testing: (910) 678-1101 (Monday–Friday, 9 a.m.–5 p.m.)

What are PFAS?

PFAS are widely used, long lasting chemicals, components of which break down very slowly over time. Scientific studies have shown that exposure to some PFAS in the environment may be linked to harmful health effects in humans and animals.

Whether you're on well water or municipal water, understanding what's in your water is an important first step toward protecting your home and health. Here’s a quick breakdown of the testing options available:

  • We test for pH, hardness, chlorine, and iron—key indicators of your water’s condition.
  • A technician will collect a sample from your outdoor faucet or well source (no need for you to be home).
  • Results will be emailed to you within 7 business days.

Advanced Testing

There are many advanced testing options available to detect the presence of specific contaminants in your water. You can order a home test kit yourself from websites like Tap Score, Safe Home or SimpleLab or work with a Thomas Plumbing technician and we can send your water sample off for advanced testing.

PFAS Specific Testing

PFAS are often referred to as “forever chemicals” due to their persistence in the environment and potential health concerns. Unfortunately, PFAS testing is costly (at-home kits often exceed $400) and difficult to perform accurately outside of lab settings.

Because PFAS contamination has been detected in our region (see EWG links above), we recommend assuming its presence and installing a PFAS-specific filter when designing a whole home water filtration system.
